Atopic Dermatitis: What is happening to your skin?
Atopic Dermatitis is something that affects many people, and some worse than others. According to statistics, 10 to 20% of children are affected by atopic dermatitis while only 1 to 3% of adults are. But what is happening to your skin when you suffer from Atopic Dermatitis? Let’s learn more about this skin disorder and discover our tips to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from it.
What is Atopic Dermatitis & what are the clinical signs?
Atopic Dermatitis is a dysfunction of the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. It is an intense dry skin condition where the skin lacks lipids and proteins. Eczema is a form of Atopic Dermatitis. You will notice that flare-ups are common when you suffer from Atopic Dermatitis, causing redness and irritation. Atopic dermatitis tends to run in families & mostly affects babies.
The areas affected by atopic dermatitis in a baby are usually the chubbier areas, the cheeks & forehead. In children, after the age of one, it usually presents itself in the creases, in the elbows, behind the knees & under the arms. Then, adults are more affected on the face, neck & hands. An atopic tendency can result in other clinical symptoms such as asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever) & allergic conjunctivitis.
The clinical signs of atopic dermatitis are itching, redness, scaling, tightness, sleeping disorders, cracks, chapping & discomfort after the shower. If you can, try to identify the triggers, whether it is emotional stress, environmental factors such as cigarette smoke or dust or even cosmetics, household cleaners, detergents or perfumes. The focus is to keep the skin moisturized and calm & soothe skin irritation.
How to treat Atopic Dermatitis?
BIODERMA’S aim is to improve the quality of life for patients with atopic dermatitis by nourishing & moisturising atopic skin, decreasing itching & soothing irritations, with lasting results. BIODERMA have come up with a solution for atopic dermatitis by treating Atopic Dermatitis with a patented ingredient called “Sucroester”, which prevents the adhesions of the bacteria that is responsible for atopic dermatitis (Staphylococcus aureus). Additional ingredients durably rebuild the skin’s barrier for soothed, comfortable & more resistant skin. This patented ingredient is present in the ATODERM range in the products for dry, very dry & irritated skin. The recommended skincare routine for atopic dermatitis would be:
- To Cleanse: ATODERM Bath & Shower Oil or ATODERM Intensive Gel Moussant
- To Moisturise: ATODERM Intensive Baume
- To Treat: ATODERM SOS Spray
All of these products are suitable for the face & body and for the whole family; babies, children & adults.
BIODERMA’S Tip & Tricks
The skin is at its driest when you get out of the bath or the shower so it is the perfect time to moisturize. We would recommend you always apply a moisturiser when you get out of the bath or shower. It is really important to keep the skin moisturised when you have atopic dermatitis.
When you are in the bath or the shower, try not have the water too hot & try not stay in for too long as it can cause the skin to become even drier.
If you can try to monitor what triggers an inflammation, we would recommend you keep a small ATODERM SOS Spray in your bag or close by. You can use this as frequently as you like and it will take the irritation down within 60 seconds.
